Mixx: When users become the newsroom staff

“Mixx is your link to the web content that really matters“.
The user-generated-content site, Mixx, doesn’t have an editor who decides the headlines. Instead, users decide all the editorial items!
Here’s how it works:
Only Super Mixxers can tag a story as “Breaking.” If you haven’t achieved Super Mixxer status, just keep Mixxing: add great content, vote and comment—you’ll get there!
It takes two to Mixx a Breaking News story. Two Super Mixxers, that is.
Only a limited number of stories can be in the Breaking News category at any one time, and only for a limited time.
Once a Breaking News story gets enough votes, it will move over to “Popular,” and to any other category with which it was tagged (entertainment, politics, science, etc.).
It looks like more simple rather than the biggest social news digg.
Anyway, looking forward to seeing how it works out!

Blogging party gets official stamp of approval

Bloggers and internet publishing in Indonesia gained new legitimacy Saturday when Communications and Information Minister Muhammad Nuh declared Oct. 27 National Bloggers Day.
The announcement was made at Pesta Blogger (blogger party) 2007, Indonesia’s first large meeting of bloggers, which around 500 people attended.
“I can see today the Indonesian blogger community is developing the use of IT facilities and filling information gaps in the country with blogging,” the former rector of East Java’s November 10 Institute of Technology said.
He said the gathering and blogging were both “revolutionary” and deserved support.
“Blogs can be educational, empowering and enlightening. That’s why I can guarantee you curbing blogs will never happen in this country,” said Nuh.
“I also notice most of the bloggers are young, which is good. As the proverb says, ‘The future of a country is in hands of the young generation’. Wimar (Witoelar) is the only old one here,” he kiddingly said, to laughter from the audience.
Having handled many talk shows, Wimar Witoelar was the moderator at a discussion at the gathering, which was initiated by public relations agency Maverick and driven by a team of bloggers.
Speaking at the discussion were Nuh, committee chairman Enda Nasution, Asia Blogging Network chief executive Budi Putra and Adrianto Gani of www.wikimu.com.
Budi, a former Tempo journalist and now full-time blogger, highlighted the importance of blog contents.
“No one will visit and revisit your blog no matter how cool your blog design is unless you have something substantial to offer,” he said.
Well-developed content, Budi said, would automatically attract more visitors and might create business opportunities with advertisers as media for advertisement “is getting narrow”.
The gathering drew not only Jakartan bloggers, but also an Indonesian living in neighboring Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur and many others from West Sumatra’s Padang, West Java’s Bandung, Central Java’s Semarang, Yogyakarta, South Sulawesi’s Makassar and Central Sulawesi’s Poso.
There are 150,000 bloggers in the country.
A blogger and correspondent for The Jakarta Post in Poso, Ruslan Sangadji, said he had traveled to Jakarta with the help of friends.
“I spent Rp 1.28 million (US$140) using the money I collected from my friends. And now I don’t have more money to go home,” he said, to laughter.
“I eagerly came to learn how to build blogs for the Palu (Central Sulawesi) community.”
Violinist Maylaffayza, who writes for 11 blogs, was also among the participants.
“Please do blog because blogging is all about reaching out to people, making friends from all around the world, creating personal relationships and can be very educational,” she said.

The power of blunder blog?

What:Engadget posted a story yesterday claiming the expected June launch of the iPhone would be delayed until October and the Leopard October debut would be postponed until January. Engadget’s credited its source as coming from an internal Apple e-mail.
The e-mail tip turned out to be false. But before anyone figured this out Apple’s stock tumbled 3 percent losing $4 billion in value by the end of the trading day.[Source]Comment:The power of blog turned to cause stock plunge. Too bad this time caused by the false news. It’s terrible. No wonder, this news hits the international head-line today. I think it’s beyond Engadget’s intention, off course. Hopefully Engadget (and us) got a lesson from this case. Next time better.

Just ask a Ninja to win the Webby Awards

Most of the 11th Annual Webby Awards winner are departed from a unique idea and “niche market” to create their websites. Such experiment and maneuvre were also needed. And what’s the details, just Ask A Ninja to answer….
The winners of the 11th Annual Webby Awards, which are devoted to “honoring excellence on the Internet,” have been announced. Encompassing nearly 70 categories in Web sites, interactive advertising, mobile media, and online video, this year’s winners ran the gamut from a site devoted to cute photos of baby animals to the hit NBC sitcom The Office.
Each category had five official nominees, and within each category there was a judge-picked winner as well as a “Peoples’ Voice” winner chosen by a popular vote. (In some categories, the same site won both awards.) A full list of winners is available here.
There was a distinct emphasis on the media-sharing sites that have popped up over the past few years: the Yahoo-owned photo-sharing site Flickr won in three categories: Community, Best Practices, and Design-Function; and video blogging platform Blip.tv won in the “Broadband” category.” Viral video, too, was also heavily recognized. Costumed video podcaster Ask A Ninja was selected for a “Best Actor” award in the Film & Video division, while “Lonelygirl15″ actress Jessica Rose earned the “Best Actress” title. There was a separate award for the best in viral phenomena, which was won by The Extreme Diet Coke & Mentos Experiments video in which two guys in lab coats set off soda geysers.
The “Person of the Year” awards, appropriately enough, went to YouTube co-founders Steve Chen and Chad Hurley.

Facebooking every day!

Not all Internet services could force me to log-in into their applications almost every day except Facebook.
This damn service also forced me to keep connected even in my BlackBerry!
Due to my unlimitted data plan for the powerful device, it means that I always be connected to the Facebook 24 hours a day!
Now, Facebook added another new feature to keep me (OMG) more addicted to: Facebook Chat!

Its blogger said:
This week marks the launch of Facebook Chat—a new way for you to communicate with your friends in real-time. The Wall and Inbox have been the primary ways to communicate, but when more immediacy is necessary—for example when making plans for lunch in half an hour or arguing over a foul call in the NCAA tournament—they might not be enough. Chat aims to fill this gap.
Enough is enough, Mark. Hahahaha. Two thumbs up for all of your team!

You’ve got a Tweet!, Microbloging

Started over a few weeks ago, I got back to my Twitter account. Despite the fact I have been a member of this service more than a year ago, frankly speaking, I didn’t use it regularly. Twittering two times a month is a kind of luxury thing for me.
So why did I finally come back to Twitter? My answer is simple: I started to use Twitter as well as other social networking service in order to expand my networking, to looking for more friends, to find out more strangers.
What is Twitter?
According to Wikipedia:
Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send “updates” (or “tweets”; text-based posts, up to 140 characters long) to the Twitter website, via short message service (e.g. on a cell phone), instant messaging, or a third-party application such as Twitterrific or Facebook.
Right now, I frequently send my Twitter messages from my BlackBerry Curve 8310 (rather than its web version in PC). I am using both GTalk and TwitterBerry-client.
If you’re on IM all day anyway, why not read and receive Tweets? GTalk is an excellent application for this.
But, for writing Twitter messages, I prefer using TwitterBerry that kindly always reminded me to write less than 140 characters (which GTalk can’t do).
Ah yeah, I am also putting a Twitter badge in the sidebar of this blog.
You can follow me through Twitter by adding this: http://twitter.com/budip .
Happy twittering!

Linux, Open Source

, as well as other open source platforms, is just another business model. Because it was logically feasible developed and marketted. No royalties, no licenses. All you need is use it in your products and sell them in competitive price so that many consumers could buy. Just like Dell will do.
Dell, oddly enough, is listening to the many thousands of direct requests its customers made during its big public brainstorm (aka IdeaStorm) not so far back. The result of nearly 70% of participants requesting Linux on Dell machines? Linux will soon be pre-installed on consumer desktops and laptops outside their server and Precision desktop lineup — hoorah!

Using T-Mobile HotSpot

During my short stay in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, I decided to use a local Wi-Fi service. Of course, I was a little bit worried to use my Indonesia’s GPRS/3G service when browsing and blogging on the go in my Nokia E90 Communicator.
I found a brief information about T-Mobile HotSpot in my hotel’s room when I arrived here at last Monday night. T-Mobile has around 700 hot-spot location throughout the Netherlands.
Since I just have this only leaflet with me — and dunno other services’ information at that moment — so I decided to use this service.
You don’t have to be a T-Mobile subscriber to use its hot-spot. You will receive a user name and password at the time of purchase.
There are to options to purchase T-Mobile HotSpot: minute bundle and consecutive period bundle.
In minute bundle option, you can use the credit whenever you want up to one year after the time you first log in — your usage is charged per minute, with a minimum of 10 minutes per session.
You can purchase HotSpot MultiPass - 60 minutes for 60 euro; HotSpot MultiPass - 180 minutes (14.95 euro); if you use of a Dutch cellular service, you can also send the word HOTSPOT to number 4999 requesting a username and password and this is costing 1.50 euro (debitted directly to your bill).
On the other hand, if you prefer to purchase voucher for a consecutive period, you can choose either HotSpot Pass - 24 hours (19.5 euro), HotSpot Pass - 7 days (39.95 euro) or HotSpot Pass - 30 days (79.95 euro).
I purchased the HotSpot MultiPass - 180 minutes (14.95 euro) with my credit card.
And I think it’s really a high-speed internet: I got 11.0 Mbps on the go! It’s even working in my hotel room!
